Plan to Expand Coastal Shipping

The Government  has plans to increase the share of coastal shipping in modal cargo mix to 10% by 2020 from the current share so as to reduce the overdependence on road and rail sectors for domestic cargo transportation. The Government of India is responsible for setting up of major ports and at present there are 12 major ports in the country. In 2014-15 there were 205 non-major ports which are under the purview of the State Governments/Union Territories. The percentage share of major ports and non-major ports in the cargo handled in the last three years is given below:

Four new Ports at Colachal (Enayam) in Tamil Nadu, Sagar in West Bengal, Durgarajapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Vadhawan in Maharashtra have been approved in principle.
