वचन-पत्रों, विनिमय-पत्रों और चैकों से सम्बन्धित विधि को परिभाषित और संशोधित करने के लिये अधिनियम ।
उद्देशिका -- वचन-पत्रों, विनिमय-पत्रों और चैकों से सम्बन्धित विधि को परिभाषित और संशोधित करना समीचीन है; अतः एतद्द्वारा निम्नलिखित रूप में यह अधिनियमित किया जाता है :

प्रारिम्भक
1. संक्षिप्त नाम --
यह अधिनियम परक्राम्य लिखत अधिनियम, 1881 कहा जा सकेगा ।
स्थानीय क्षेत्र, हुण्डियों, आदि से सम्बन्धित प्रथाओं की व्यावृत्ति, प्रारम्भ -- इसका विस्तार सम्पूर्ण भारत पर है, किन्तु इसमें अन्तर्विष्ट कोई भी बात इंडियन पेपर करेंसी एक्ट, 1871 (1871 का 3) की धारा 21 पर या किसी प्राच्य भाषा में की किसी भी लिखत से सम्बन्धित किसी भी स्थानीय प्रथा पर प्रभाव नहीं डालता :
परन्तु ऐसी प्रथाएं लिखत के निकाय के किन्हीं भी ऐसे शब्दों द्वारा, जिनसे यह आशय उपदर्शित हो कि उसके पक्षकारों के विधिक सम्बन्ध इस अधिनियम द्वारा शासित होंगे, अपवर्जित की जा सकेगी; और यह पहली मार्च, 1882 को प्रवृत्त होगा ।

An Act to define and amend the law relating to promissory notes, bills of exchange and cheques
Preamble — WHEREAS it is expedient to define and amend the law relating to promissory notes, bills of exchange and cheques; It is hereby enacted as follows
CHAPTER I
PRELIMINARY
1. Short title –
This Act may be called the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.
Local extent, Saving of usages relating to Hundis, etc., Commencement — It extends to the whole of India; but nothing herein contained affects the Indian Paper Currency Act, 1871 (3 of 1871). Section 21. or affects any local usage relating to any instrument in an oriental language :
Provided that such usages may be excluded by any words in the body of the instrument, which indicate any intention that the legal relations of the parties thereto shall be governed by this Act; and it shall come into force on the first day of March, 1882.
