प्रस्तावना

उद्देशिका -  भारत के लिए एक साधारण दण्ड संहिता का उपबन्ध करना समीचीन है। अतः यह निम्नलिखित रूप में अधिनियमित किया जाता है।

1. संहिता का नाम और उसके प्रवर्तन का विस्तार -

यह अधिनियम भारतीय दण्ड संहिता कहलाएगा और इसका विस्तार सम्पूर्ण भारत पर होगा। [The words "except the State of Jammu and Kashmir" omitted by Act 34 of 2019, s. 95 and the Fifth Schedule (w.e.f. 31-10- 2019)]

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Preamble - Whereas it is expedient to provide a general Penal Code for India it is enacted as follows.

1. Title and extent of operation of the Code -

This Act shall be called the Indian Penal Code, and shall extend to the whole of India. [The words "except the State of Jammu and Kashmir" omitted by Act 34 of 2019, s. 95 and the Fifth Schedule (w.e.f. 31-10- 2019)]
