The Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar Act, 1969

Punjab Act No. 21 of 1969

    An Act to establish and incorporate a University at Amritsar to mark the five hundredth birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

    Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Punjab in the Twentieth Year of Republic of India as follows:-

1. Short title. - This Act may be called the Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar Act, 1969.

2. Definitions. - In this Act and in all Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations made hereunder, unless context otherwise requires:-

(a) "College" means an institution maintained by or admitted to the privileges of the University under this Act:

(b) "Principal" means the head of a College, and includes, when there is no Principal, the person for the time being duly appointed to act as Principal, and, in the absence of the Principal or the acting Principal, a Vice-Principal duly appointed as such;

(c) "Statutes", "Ordinances" and "Regulations" means respectively the Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations of the University made by or under this Act;

(d) "teachers" include Professors, Readers, Lecturers and other person imparting instruction in the University or in any College;

(e) "University" means the Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar, as incorporated under this Act.

3. Incorporation of the University. - (1) The first Chancellor and the first Vice-Chancellor of the University and the first members of the Senate, the Syndicate and the Academic Council and all persons who may hereafter become such officers or members, so long as they continue to hold such office or membership, are hereby constituted a body corporate by the name of the "The Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar."

(2) The University shall have perpetual succession and a common seal with power to acquire, hold and dispose of property, and to contract. and may by the said name sue and be sued.

(3) The University shall be located as Amritsar.
