THE ASSAM DEPUTY SPEAKER’S SALARIES AND ALLOWANCES ACT, 1956

ASSAM ACT VIII OF 1956

    An Act to provide for the Salary and Allowances of the Deputy Speakert Assam Legislative Assembly.

    Preamble.— Whereas it is expedient to fix afresh the Salaries and Allowances of the Deputy Speaker ;

    It is hereby enacted in the Seventh Year of the Republic of India as follows:—

1. Short title:— (i) This Act may be called the Assam Deputy Speaker’s Salaries and Allowances Act, 1956.

Commencement.— (ii) The Act shall come into force at once.

2. Salary of Deputy Speaker.—There shall be paid to the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly a salary of Rupees seven hundred and fifty per mensem.

3. Residence.—(i) The Deputy Speaker shall be entitled to a free furnished residence, with grounds appurtenant thereto, maintained at public expense in Shillong throughout the year, or at any other place, which the State Government may, from time to time for the purpose of this Act, declare to be the headquarters of Government, or at a place where the Assam Legislative Assembly meets or in lieu of such free furnished residence Rupees one hundred and fifty per mensem.

(ii) The State Government may for the purpose of this Act define by rules the expression ‘maintained at public expense’ in relation to residence.

4. Conveyance Allowance.— There shall be paid to the Deputy Speaker a conveyance allowance of Rupees one hundred per mensem.

5. Travelling and daily allowances.— The Deputy Speaker shall be entitled to travelling and daily allowances in respect of tours undertaken by him in the discharge of his official duties at such rates and upon such conditions as may be determined by the State Government.

6. Prohibition against practising any profession , drawing salary as member, etc.—The Deputy Speaker shall not,

(i) during the tenure of his office for which he draws salary, practise any profession or engage in any trade or undertake for remuneration any employment other than his duties as Deputy Speaker, and

(ii) while he draws salary for his office, be entitled to receive any sum out of funds provided by the Assam Legislative Assembly by way of salary or allowances in respect of his membership of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

7. Repeal.—The Assam Deputy Speakers Salary Act, 1948 (Act VIII of 1948) is hereby repealed.
